First off, I just want to applaud you for choosing to start your fitness journey and invest in your overall wellbeing. Go you! Whether you’re stepping into the gym for the first time or working out at home, having the right fitness essentials will make your fitness journey a whole lot smoother.
I’ve compiled a list of these workout essentials that I believe would really help you in your fitness journey. I’m also very nit-picky on good quality items, so most of these essentials are actually products I’ve had for years and am still using today.
Here’s a list of my favorite workout essentials for beginners:
The Best Gym Essentials for Beginners
1. Resistance Bands
There are two different types of resistance bands: lightweight resistance bands and heavy bands which are mostly used for the lower body. I highly recommend purchasing a set of lightweight bands and a heavy band, if you want to target your glutes.
These are my favorite bands that I use for upper body days that I highly recommend! They are perfect for practicing assisted pull-ups, body stretching, and doing shoulder warm-ups such as shoulder rotations.
For a good, effective booty band, I recommend investing in this set that comes with 3 levels of resistance. This is perfect if you are a beginner and gradually want to increase resistance as you build your glutes.
2. Reusable Water Bottle
It’s so important to stay hydrated when working out especially if you tend to sweat up a storm (sadly this is me). Because I need to stay hydrated throughout the day after working out, I loveee using my Hydrojug. It’s literally 1 gallon, so it lasts me the whole day.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND investing in one cause you don’t have to worry about refilling it since it literally will take almost the whole day to finish it lol.
I actually have this in the aqua color (it comes in many colors), and I’ve had this bottle for almost two years now. It’s still in really great condition and is really easy for me to carry at the gym. With that said, a reusable water bottle is a definite must!
3. Noise-Cancelling Earbuds
Having a good pair of noise-cancelling earbuds or headphones is a must at the gym! I don’t know about you, but I get easily distracted by loud noises, so I use my TOZO T10 wireless earbuds to tune everything out.
It literally is SOO effective at noise-cancelling that I literally can’t hear anyone if they try to talk loudly to me (which has happened occasionally where they’ll have to wave their hands to get my attention).
I absolutely love these earbuds and I haven’t come across any issues using them in the past year. They have a really long-lasting battery life, and it’s so easy to carry around. Also they are definitely more budget-friendly than a lot of other brands, so I really recommend looking into the TOZO T10 earbuds if you’re interested!
4. Creatine
If you need a little boost of energy before you start your workouts, I recommend looking into buying a creatine supplement. You definitely don’t need to buy one if you don’t like taking supplements.
Creatine basically gives you that extra boost of energy and keep your stamina up during high performance activity levels.
So many athletes and fitness influencers swear by creatine. To be honest, I’ve yet to try creatine because I’m trying to finish my pre-workout supplement first. But I’ve got my eye on this creatine brand since it’s been getting so much hype.
Definitely gotta see if it’s worth the hype!
Again, this isn’t really an essential in your gym, but I wanted to include just in case you were looking into getting more of an extra boost in your workout routine.
5. Barbell Pad
I wish I had invested in a barbell pad a lot earlier when I was doing hip thrusts on a Smith machine. Girls, I can’t even tell you how much my hips and lady part would be in pain from the pressure of the bar pressing against them. And after using a barbell pad, literally, I can’t go back to not using one.
So please, please, if you plan to do hip thrusts on a barbell or Smith machine, please do yourself a huge favor and invest in a barbell pad. Trust me, your lady part will thank you. 🙂
If you’re looking to buy one, this is a popular barbell pad that many use at the gym. It’s perfect for squats, hip thrusts, and lunges, especially if you’re using heavy weights. You don’t want to injure your back and having a barbell pad will add extra cushion and support!
6. Protein Powder
This is one of my favorite essentials! Personally for me, I have a difficult time intaking the necessary protein for my diet, so I decided to make my own protein shakes with protein powder. Based on many studies, research shows that protein is necessary for muscle development and growth.
I use the Muscle Milk Pro series chocolate flavored powder, and did I mention I love chocolate?! Drinking this as a shake just take like drinking chocolate milk when I mix my protein powder with almond milk. Two scoops from this protein powder is already 50g of protein, which definitely helps me maintain my protein intake.
I highly recommend this brand if you are looking to purchase a protein powder and don’t know where to start.
A Friendly Reminder about Being a Beginner at the Gym!
I know the gym can seem like a terrifying place, especially when you’re just starting off. Please know that you’re not alone, and so many people also feel this way, too! Everyone starts somewhere, right? But I believe in you!
The fact that you are choosing to invest in your physical and mental health is so incredibly empowering. On a side note, I hope this post helped you feel a bit more confident in having some sense of direction of essentials that you can start investing in for your gym journey. 🙂
